magic

”Magic” encompasses a range of meanings, primarily falling into two categories:

  1. Supernatural Practices: This refers to the use of rituals, symbols, actions, gestures, or language aimed at harnessing supernatural forces to influence events or outcomes. Historically, magic has been distinguished from religion and science, though definitions vary widely among scholars.
  2. Performance Art (Illusion): In this context, magic involves tricks, effects, or illusions designed to entertain audiences by creating seemingly impossible feats. Performers, known as magicians, use techniques such as sleight of hand, misdirection, and optical illusions to amaze and amuse.

The term “magic” can also be spelled “magick,” a usage popularized by the British occultist Aleister Crowley to differentiate certain esoteric practices from stage magic.

In contemporary society, interest in both supernatural magic and performance magic persists, reflecting a blend of cultural traditions, entertainment, and personal beliefs.
