Manny Machado is an American professional baseball player who plays as a third baseman and shortstop for the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on July 6, 1992, in Miami, Florida, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles as the third overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. Machado made his MLB debut with the Orioles in August 2012.
Over his career, Machado has established himself as one of MLB’s premier infielders, earning multiple All-Star selections and Gold Glove Awards for his defensive excellence. In February 2019, he signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres, marking one of the most lucrative deals in American sports history at that time.
In the 2024 season, Machado achieved significant milestones, including hitting his 1,000th career RBI and surpassing Nate Colbert to become the Padres’ all-time home run leader with 164 home runs. He finished the season with a .263 batting average, 29 home runs, and 105 RBIs, earning his second Silver Slugger Award.
On March 29, 2025, during a game against the Atlanta Braves, Machado exited due to right calf tightness, which he described as a minor cramp. He expressed confidence in returning to play in the next game.
Beyond baseball, Machado is involved in various business ventures, including being part of the ownership group for San Diego FC, an expansion team in Major League Soccer that began play in 2025.
