Rickey Henderson (December 25, 1958 – December 20, 2024) was an American professional baseball left fielder, widely regarded as the greatest leadoff hitter and base stealer in MLB history. Over a 25-year career spanning from 1979 to 2003, Henderson played for nine teams, including four stints with the Oakland Athletics. He holds MLB records for career stolen bases (1,406), runs scored (2,295), unintentional walks, and leadoff home runs.

In 1982, Henderson set a single-season record with 130 stolen bases. His dynamic play earned him 10 All-Star selections, two World Series titles, the 1990 American League MVP award, and induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.

Henderson passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 65 due to pneumonia. In their home opener on March 31, 2025, the Athletics honored Henderson by having every player wear his No. 24 jersey. Additionally, outfielder Lawrence Butler paid tribute by wearing custom cleats featuring Henderson’s imagery and nickname.
