lip bu tan intel ceo

Lip-Bu Tan, a seasoned technologist and former CEO of Cadence Design Systems, has been appointed as Intel’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This follows the abrupt departure of former CEO Pat Gelsinger in December 2024.

Tan’s appointment aims to revitalize Intel amid challenges in the semiconductor industry.

Born on November 12, 1959, in Muar, Johor (now Malaysia), Tan moved to Singapore during his youth. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Nanyang University, a Master of Science in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an MBA from the University of San Francisco.

In 1987, he founded Walden International, a venture capital firm that has invested in companies like Ambarella Inc., Creative Technology, S3 Graphics, and Sina Corp.

Tan joined Cadence Design Systems in 2004, serving as CEO from 2009 to 2017. Under his leadership, Cadence’s net worth grew to $1.3 billion by 2012. He has also served on the boards of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Schneider Electric, Softbank, and was previously a board member of Intel from 2022 to 2024.

Following Gelsinger’s departure, Tan will assume the role of CEO on March 18, 2025. Interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus will resume their previous roles as CFO and CEO of Intel Products, respectively.
