Chief Justice John Roberts recently addressed President Donald Trump’s call to impeach U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg, who had ruled against the administration’s deportation plans involving Venezuelan gang members.
Roberts emphasized that impeachment is not an appropriate response to judicial decisions with which one disagrees, underscoring the importance of the appellate review process in addressing legal disputes. He stated, “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.”
This rare public rebuke highlights the judiciary’s commitment to independence and the separation of powers, reinforcing that judicial decisions should be challenged through established legal channels rather than political means.
