Darian DeVries, who served as the head coach of the West Virginia University (WVU) men’s basketball team for the 2024–2025 season, has accepted the head coaching position at Indiana University. In his sole season at WVU, DeVries led the Mountaineers to a 19–13 record, achieving significant victories over teams like Gonzaga, Kansas, and Iowa State.

Prior to joining WVU, DeVries spent six successful seasons at Drake University, guiding the Bulldogs to six consecutive 20-win seasons and earning Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors twice.

DeVries’ departure from WVU has impacted the team in multiple ways. His son, Tucker DeVries, who transferred to WVU from Drake, is expected to follow his father to Indiana. Tucker, a senior guard/forward, averaged 14.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game before his season-ending shoulder surgery in December 2024.

Additionally, WVU has lost two 2025 recruits following DeVries’ departure.

WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker expressed disappointment over DeVries’ decision to leave after such a short tenure, emphasizing the challenges this presents for the program.

The university is now tasked with finding a new head coach to lead the men’s basketball team in the upcoming seasons.
