American Airlines Group Inc. is a publicly traded airline holding company headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. It was formed on December 9, 2013, through the merger of AMR Corporation (the parent company of American Airlines) and US Airways Group (the parent company of US Airways).
The integration was completed when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a single operating certificate for both carriers on April 8, 2015, and all flights now operate under the American Airlines brand.
As of 2024, American Airlines Group operates the world’s largest airline, measured by the number of passengers carried and scheduled passenger-kilometers flown. The company reported revenues of $54.2 billion and a net income of $1.262 billion for the year.
It employs approximately 133,300 people.
The group operates through its principal wholly owned subsidiary, American Airlines, and regional carriers Envoy Air Inc., Piedmont Airlines Inc., and PSA Airlines Inc., collectively known as American Eagle. These regional carriers operate under a codeshare and service agreement with American Airlines, providing feeder services to its mainline operations.
American Airlines Group is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has codeshare agreements with several international carriers, including British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and others. It also maintains joint business agreements for transatlantic, transpacific, and Australia/New Zealand routes with partners like British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, and Qantas.
In early 2025, American Airlines, along with other major U.S. carriers, faced challenges due to economic uncertainty, reduced government travel, and decreased consumer demand. These factors led to lowered financial forecasts and concerns about profitability in the first quarter of 2025.
