Multiple pet food brands have recently recalled cat food products due to potential contamination with the H5N1 bird flu virus. These recalls are linked to cases of cats contracting the virus after consuming the affected raw food.
Savage Pet Food Recall
On March 15, 2025, Savage Pet recalled two products:
- Large Chicken Boxes (84 oz.)
- Small Chicken Boxes (21 oz.)
Both had a “best by” date of November 15, 2026. These products were distributed in California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington. The recall followed reports of cats in Colorado and New York contracting avian flu after consuming these products. Symptoms in cats include fever, lethargy, reduced appetite, inflamed eyes, discharge from eyes or nose, breathing difficulties, tremors, seizures, and blindness. Pet owners noticing these signs should contact a veterinarian promptly.
Northwest Naturals Recall
In January 2025, Northwest Naturals recalled a batch of its 2-pound Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after a cat in Oregon died from consuming it. The product tested positive for H5N1. The recall affected products with “best if used by” dates of May 21, 2026, and June 23, 2026, sold in multiple U.S. states and British Columbia, Canada. Consumers were advised to discard the product and seek refunds.
Health Recommendations
Health officials advise against feeding pets raw or undercooked meat products, especially chicken, due to the risk of bird flu contamination. Cooking meat to appropriate temperatures eliminates harmful bacteria and viruses. While human infections from handling contaminated pet food are rare, it’s prudent to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands and sanitizing surfaces after handling raw pet food.
