On March 15, 2025, the Washington Capitals defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-1 at SAP Center in San Jose. Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 887th career goal, moving within eight of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894.
Ovechkin also contributed an assist on Dylan Strome’s opening goal. Other Capitals scorers included Aliaksei Protas, Taylor Raddysh, and Trevor van Riemsdyk. Goaltender Logan Thompson made 19 saves for Washington. Macklin Celebrini scored the Sharks’ only goal. The Capitals improved to 44-15-8, while the Sharks fell to 18-41-9.
