Early Life and Education

Born on July 2, 1961, in Cleveland, Ohio, Kellogg attended St. Joseph High School, where he established himself as a basketball standout by scoring 51 points in the 1979 state championship game—a record that still stands. He went on to play college basketball at Ohio State University from 1979 to 1982, earning All-Big Ten Conference honors. In 1996, he completed his marketing degree at Ohio State.

Professional Basketball Career

In 1982, Kellogg was selected by the Indiana Pacers as the 8th overall pick in the NBA Draft. He made an immediate impact, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team by averaging 20.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in his debut season. Over his five-season career with the Pacers, he averaged 18.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. However, knee injuries prematurely ended his playing career.

Broadcasting Career

Transitioning to broadcasting, Kellogg joined ESPN in 1989 as a basketball analyst and later worked with the Big East Network and Prime Sports. He began his association with CBS Sports in 1993, initially serving as a game analyst for NCAA tournament coverage.

By 1997, he became a full-time studio and game analyst, eventually replacing Billy Packer as the lead college basketball game analyst in the 2008-2009 season. Kellogg is known for coining the term “spurtability” to describe a team’s ability to score rapidly.

In March 2025, Kellogg shared his March Madness bracket, predicting a No. 5 seed would make it to the Final Four.
