Cody Poteet, born on July 30, 1994, in San Diego, California, is a professional baseball pitcher currently affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He bats and throws right-handed.
Early Life and Education
Poteet attended Christian High School in El Cajon, California. He was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 27th round of the 2012 MLB Draft but chose to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) instead. During his time at UCLA, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2014. In his junior year (2015), Poteet made 27 appearances (13 starts), achieving a 7–1 record with a 2.45 ERA and ranking second on the team with 68 strikeouts over 88 innings.
Professional Career
- Miami Marlins (2021–2022): Poteet made his MLB debut with the Miami Marlins on May 12, 2021. Over parts of the 2021 and 2022 seasons, he accumulated a 5–4 record with a 3.80 ERA and 69 strikeouts across 83 innings pitched.
- New York Yankees (2024): In January 2024, Poteet signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Yankees. He started one game, earning a win with six innings pitched and one earned run allowed. He was later placed on the injured list due to a right triceps strain and made five appearances (four starts) in total, recording a 3–0 record and a 2.22 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 24 1/3 innings.
- Chicago Cubs (2025): In December 2024, Poteet was traded to the Chicago Cubs as part of the deal that sent Cody Bellinger to the Yankees. He began the 2025 season with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. However, on March 27, 2025, he was designated for assignment to make room for right-hander Brad Keller on the Cubs’ 40-man roster.
- Baltimore Orioles (2025–Present): On March 29, 2025, Poteet was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations. He was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, providing the Orioles with additional pitching depth.
