Early Life and Education
Born on April 27, 1969, in Washington, D.C., Cory Booker was raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Arts in sociology from Stanford University. As a Rhodes Scholar, he completed a master’s degree in U.S. history at The Queen’s College, Oxford. He later obtained his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.
Political Career
- Newark Municipal Council (1998–2002): Booker began his political journey by winning a seat on the Newark Municipal Council, representing the Central Ward.
- Mayor of Newark (2006–2013): He served two terms as mayor, focusing on reducing the city’s budget deficit and increasing affordable housing development.
- U.S. Senate (2013–Present): Appointed in 2013 and elected subsequently in 2014 and 2020, Booker became New Jersey’s senior senator in August 2024 following Bob Menendez’s resignation.
Recent Activities
- Senate Leadership: In January 2025, Booker assumed the role of Chair of the Senate Democratic Strategic Communications Committee, the fourth-highest position in Senate Democratic leadership.
- Senate Speech (April 2025): On April 1, 2025, Booker delivered a marathon speech on the Senate floor to protest certain Trump administration policies, stating he would speak “as long as he is physically able.”
