Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina. Established in 1838 as Trinity College, it relocated to Durham in 1892 and was renamed in 1924 to honor industrialist James Buchanan Duke, who significantly contributed to its endowment.
The university spans over 8,600 acres and comprises three contiguous sub-campuses, along with a marine laboratory in Beaufort. Duke offers a diverse range of academic programs through its various schools and institutes, including the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering.
In athletics, Duke’s teams, known as the Blue Devils, compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference. The men’s basketball team, in particular, has a storied history, having secured multiple NCAA championships under the leadership of former coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Recently, Duke clinched the ACC tournament title by defeating Louisville 73-62, even without star player Cooper Flagg, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury. Flagg is expected to return for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Prospective students interested in exploring Duke’s academic offerings and campus can schedule tours and information sessions through the admissions office. The university is also currently under federal investigation concerning alleged race-based discrimination in its graduate programs, as part of a broader review involving 45 universities.
