​Eric Olen is an American college basketball coach who, as of March 2025, serves as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of New Mexico. Born on October 15, 1980, in Mobile, Alabama, Olen has had a distinguished coaching career, notably transforming the UC San Diego men’s basketball program over a span of 21 years.

Coaching Career:

  • UC San Diego (2004–2025): Olen began his tenure at UC San Diego as an assistant coach in 2004, eventually ascending to the position of head coach in 2013. He led the Tritons through their transition from Division II to Division I, achieving significant milestones including three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season titles and four consecutive CCAA tournament championships. In the 2024-2025 season, Olen guided UC San Diego to a 30-5 record, securing both the Big West regular-season and tournament titles, and earning Big West Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive year.
  • University of New Mexico (2025–Present): In March 2025, Olen accepted the position of head coach at the University of New Mexico, signing a five-year contract to replace Richard Pitino, who left for Xavier University. Olen’s appointment follows a successful stint at UC San Diego, where he amassed a 240-119 overall record, making him the all-time winningest coach in the program’s history.

Personal Life:

Olen is married to Lauren, and they have two daughters, Avery and Madeline. The family relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, following his appointment as head coach.
