The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into approximately 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks from the 2015 to 2017 model years. This action follows 138 consumer complaints regarding unexpected downshifting of the six-speed automatic transmission at highway speeds, leading to rapid deceleration and potential loss of control.
Ford has acknowledged the issue and is cooperating with NHTSA’s investigation. The company stated that the problem affects only the six-speed transmission models.
This investigation adds to Ford’s history of transmission-related issues. Lawsuits have alleged safety concerns due to harsh and erratic shifting in vehicles equipped with Ford’s 10R80 transmission, which is used in various models, including the 2018–2021 Ford Expedition and 2018–2022 Lincoln Navigator.
It’s important to note that while these investigations and recalls are standard industry procedures, they can impact vehicle performance and safety. If you own an affected vehicle, stay informed through official communications from Ford and NHTSA.
