Gary Woodland is an American professional golfer known for his resilience both on and off the course. Born on May 21, 1984, in Topeka, Kansas, he began his collegiate career on a basketball scholarship at Washburn University before transferring to the University of Kansas on a golf scholarship. Woodland turned professional in 2007 and has since secured multiple victories, including the 2019 U.S. Open.

In August 2023, Woodland faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with a brain lesion affecting areas controlling fear and anxiety. Undergoing surgery in September 2023 to remove the benign tumor, he made a remarkable return to competitive golf in January 2024. ​

His perseverance was further highlighted in March 2025, when he achieved a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, marking his best performance since surgery. For his courage and determination, Woodland was honored with the PGA Tour Courage Award in February 2025. ​
