George Mason University (GMU) is a public research university located in Fairfax, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. Established in 1949 as a branch of the University of Virginia, it became an independent institution in 1972. As of fall 2023, GMU enrolls over 40,000 students, making it Virginia’s largest public university by enrollment.

Athletics
The university’s athletic teams, known as the Patriots, compete in NCAA Division I sports. In March 2025, the men’s basketball team reached the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship game but narrowly lost to VCU, ending their historic season in the NIT Second Round.
The men’s volleyball team also had a notable match against UC Irvine, facing a tough loss but demonstrating strong performance.

GMU’s main campus in Fairfax spans 953 acres and features state-of-the-art facilities, including the Center for the Arts, which hosts various performances and cultural events. The university also operates campuses in Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William County, as well as an international campus in Incheon, South Korea.
