Gerardo Ortiz, born on October 5, 1989, in Pasadena, California, is a prominent American-Mexican singer and songwriter known for his contributions to the regional Mexican music genre, particularly for his progressive corridos. He relocated to Culiacán, Sinaloa, at the age of five, where he began his musical journey, performing at various events and auditions.

His debut album, “Ni Hoy Ni Mañana,” earned him a Grammy nomination in 2011 for Best Northeastern Album. Throughout his career, Ortiz has received multiple accolades, including four Billboard Mexican Music Awards in 2013, recognizing him as Artist of the Year and for his work in the Northeastern category.

In 2021, his hit single “Tranquilito” achieved the number one position on major music charts in both the U.S. and Mexico, earning him his first Platinum certification.

In March 2025, Ortiz pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to performing at concerts associated with the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), a significant criminal organization. This admission was part of the federal case against Ángel del Villar, the owner of DEL Records, who faces charges related to financial dealings with drug traffickers.

Ortiz’s testimony revealed that he had participated in at least six performances for the cartel and is cooperating in the ongoing investigation.
