Giovanni “Gio” Reyna is an American professional soccer player who plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Borussia Dortmund and the United States national team. Born on November 13, 2002, in Sunderland, England, Reyna moved to the U.S. at age five and joined New York City FC’s academy in 2015.
In 2019, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund’s academy, making his professional debut in 2020. He became the youngest scorer in DFB-Pokal history and was part of the team that won the 2020-21 DFB-Pokal.
Internationally, Reyna has represented the U.S. at various youth levels, scoring 16 goals in 31 appearances. He debuted for the senior national team in November 2020 and was instrumental in their CONCACAF Nations League victories in 2021, 2023, and 2024, earning the Player of the Tournament award in the latter.
However, his recent performances have faced scrutiny. U.S. national team coach Mauricio Pochettino noted Reyna’s struggle to meet expectations, stating, “I think maybe he’s not at his best but he’s here for us to try to get to know him and, from there, to help him arrive at his best.”
On March 23, 2025, in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match, Canada defeated the U.S. 2-1, marking a significant milestone as Canada’s first consecutive victories over the U.S. since 1985. This loss has intensified discussions about Reyna’s role and future with both his club and the national team.
