Glenn Youngkin is an American businessman and politician serving as the 74th Governor of Virginia since 2022. Born on December 9, 1966, in Richmond, Virginia, he spent 25 years at The Carlyle Group, a private-equity firm, becoming co-CEO in 2018 before resigning in 2020 to pursue a political career.

In the 2021 gubernatorial election, Youngkin, representing the Republican Party, defeated former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe. His tenure has been marked by a focus on education reform, economic development, and conservative social policies. Under his leadership, Virginia was named America’s Top State for Business in 2024, attracting over $85 billion in capital commitments.

Recently, Governor Youngkin amended Virginia’s budget to increase the state’s rainy-day reserves by $300 million, responding to economic uncertainties from federal policy changes. However, his veto of bills aiming to increase the minimum wage and implement stricter firearm laws has sparked criticism from local leaders.

On social issues, Youngkin signed a bill in March 2024 codifying same-sex marriage into Virginia law, reflecting a nuanced approach to governance.
