Greg Abbott is the 48th Governor of Texas, serving since 2015. Born on November 13, 1957, he is a member of the Republican Party. Before his gubernatorial tenure, Abbott served as the state’s Attorney General from 2002 to 2015 and as a Texas Supreme Court justice from 1996 to 2001.
In 1984, Abbott became a paraplegic following an accident, making him one of the few wheelchair-using governors in U.S. history. He was first elected governor in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.
Recently, Abbott has been involved in promoting Texas as a “film-friendly” state. His office is organizing a workshop to help cities attract production companies and achieve certification as media-friendly communities.
However, Abbott has also faced controversy. In March 2025, Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett referred to him as “Governor Hot Wheels” during a speech at a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles. The comment drew criticism from Republicans, who labeled it as disgraceful.
