He began his coaching career as an assistant at various institutions, including Southwestern High School, Platteville High School, and the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1995.
He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin–Madison before ascending to the role of head coach.
Under Gard’s leadership, the Badgers have achieved significant success, including two Big Ten regular-season championships in 2020 and 2022. He has been recognized with the Big Ten Coach of the Year award twice, in 2020 and 2022, and received the Jim Phelan Award in 2016.
In the 2024–2025 season, Gard’s strategic adjustments, particularly his embrace of change and talent identification, were pivotal in the Badgers’ NCAA tournament appearance. However, the team’s journey concluded with a 91-89 loss to the BYU Cougars in the Round of 32, a game that was both thrilling and heartbreaking for fans.
Off the court, Gard’s family is also involved in basketball; his son, Isaac Gard, is a member of the Wisconsin men’s basketball team.
Despite the recent tournament exit, Gard remains a respected figure in collegiate basketball, known for his adaptability and leadership in navigating the evolving landscape of college sports.
