homer city power plant

The Homer City Generating Station, located near Homer City in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, was a significant coal-fired power plant that began operations in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Over the years, it became one of the largest coal-burning power plants in the United States.

In April 2023, the plant’s owners announced plans to shut it down, and by July 1, 2023, the facility was permanently decommissioned.

On March 22, 2025, a significant event marked the site’s transformation: the controlled demolition of the plant’s four smokestacks and three cooling towers. This demolition drew crowds of spectators and was part of the broader Homer City Redevelopment Project, aiming to repurpose the 3,500-acre site for new energy initiatives.

The redevelopment plans include constructing a new natural gas-fired power plant, signaling a shift from the site’s coal-based history to more modern energy production methods.
