Jill Scott is an American singer, songwriter, model, poet, and actress known for her rich, soulful voice and dynamic performances. Born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she began her career as a spoken word artist before transitioning to music. Her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, released in 2000, achieved platinum status and introduced hits like “A Long Walk.” She continued her success with subsequent albums, including Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004) and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007), both earning gold certifications. ​

Beyond music, Scott has made significant contributions to film and television. She made her film debut in 2007 with roles in Hounddog and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? She also starred in the BBC/HBO series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in 2008. In 2014, she portrayed Deidre “Dee Dee” Jenkins, the second wife of James Brown, in the biographical film Get on Up. More recently, she appeared as Lady Eve in The CW’s superhero series Black Lightning, which began airing in 2018. ​

In May 2020, Scott participated in a highly successful Verzuz battle with fellow artist Erykah Badu, attracting over 700,000 viewers. This event highlighted her enduring influence in the music industry. ​

In October 2024, a mural titled “Luminaries: The Coronation” was unveiled at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, honoring Scott’s legacy and contributions to arts and culture. ​
