Joseph (Joey) Louis Bufalino III (December 4, 1990 – August 17, 2023) was a prominent assistant director in New Mexico’s film industry. Born in Albuquerque, he spent his childhood between California and Albuquerque. Joey was known for his dedication to his family and friends, living by principles of fairness, kindness, consideration, honesty, and helping others daily.

He had a passion for cooking, delighting loved ones with dishes like lasagna, ribs, and Eggplant Parmesan. His vibrant personality could light up any room, always quick with a joke, story, or compliment, and displaying exceptional empathy, compassion, and gratitude.

Professionally, Joey became the youngest first assistant director in New Mexico at just 32. His film credits include “2 Guns” (2013), “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” (2021), “Longmire” (2012), “Squealer” (2023), and “Trigger Warning” (2024).

Beyond his technical skills, he was cherished for his kindness and support, making a significant impact on colleagues and the local film community.

Tragically, Joey’s life ended by suicide on August 17, 2023. His mother, Pam Rosen, noted that the stress from the COVID-19 pandemic and Hollywood strikes had deeply affected him, leading to feelings of hopelessness about his future.

His passing was mourned deeply by friends and colleagues, including actor Adam Bartley, who expressed sorrow over the loss of another member of their “Longmire” family.

In honor of his contributions, the first episode of “Dark Winds” Season 3 was dedicated to Joey, reflecting his significant impact on the New Mexico film industry.

Joey’s legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by behind-the-scenes film professionals, especially during industry disruptions. His story highlights the importance of supporting mental health within the entertainment community.
