Jonathan Allen is a professional American football defensive tackle known for his impactful presence on the field. Born on January 16, 1995, in Anniston, Alabama, he played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide, contributing to their 2015 national championship victory. In 2016, Allen earned multiple accolades, including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award, and Lombardi Award, recognizing him as the nation’s top defensive player.
The Washington Redskins selected Allen with the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Throughout his eight-season tenure with the team, later renamed the Washington Commanders, he achieved two Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and 2022. Over his career, Allen accumulated 401 tackles, 42 sacks, and 118 quarterback hits across 109 games.
In the 2024 season, Allen’s performance was hindered by a torn left pectoral muscle, limiting him to eight games. Despite this setback, he remained a valuable asset, often drawing double teams that benefited his teammates.
In February 2025, after unsuccessful trade attempts, the Commanders granted Allen permission to seek a trade and subsequently released him on March 7, 2025, freeing up $16.35 million in salary cap space.
Following his release, Allen quickly became a sought-after free agent. The San Francisco 49ers are among the teams reportedly interested in signing him, aiming to bolster their defensive line.
