Kim Mulkey is a distinguished American college basketball coach and former player, renowned for her dynamic coaching career and flamboyant fashion choices. Born on May 17, 1962, in Santa Ana, California, she was raised in Tickfaw, Louisiana. Mulkey played point guard at Louisiana Tech University from 1980 to 1984, earning All-American honors and contributing to two national championships in 1981 and 1982. She also represented the USA National Team, securing gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1983 Pan American Games.
Transitioning to coaching, Mulkey served as an assistant and associate head coach at Louisiana Tech from 1985 to 2000, where the team achieved significant success, including a national championship in 1988. In 2000, she became the head coach at Baylor University, transforming the program by leading them to three NCAA championships in 2005, 2012, and 2019. The 2012 title was particularly notable, as her team completed a perfect season with a 40-0 record.
In 2021, Mulkey returned to her home state to become the head coach of Louisiana State University’s (LSU) women’s basketball team. In her second season, she guided LSU to the NCAA championship in 2023, marking her fourth national title as a head coach.
Beyond her coaching achievements, Mulkey is celebrated for her distinctive and vibrant courtside attire. She often dons outfits that reflect her personality and Louisiana heritage, collaborating with designers like Queen of Sparkles. For instance, during a game against Auburn on January 5, 2025, she wore a black sweater adorned with a basketball and backboard design, complemented by red pants and a basketball hoop-inspired skirt, complete with netting. This ensemble contributed to the team’s 73-63 victory, extending their winning streak to 17 games.
Mulkey’s influence extends beyond the court; she serves as a mentor to former players transitioning into coaching roles. Notably, Seimone Augustus, a former LSU star and WNBA legend, joined her coaching staff, bringing valuable experience and perspectives to the team.
As of March 2025, Mulkey continues to make headlines, both for her team’s performance and her fashion statements. Her leadership and unique style have solidified her status as a prominent figure in women’s basketball.
