Matt Stevens (June 14, 1973 – March 20, 2025) was a former NFL safety known for his contributions to multiple teams, including the New England Patriots, with whom he won Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001.
Early Life and Education
Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Stevens attended Chapel Hill High School, where he was recognized for his athletic prowess. He went on to play college football at Appalachian State University, earning All-American honors and contributing to a Southern Conference Championship in 1995.
NFL Career
Stevens was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the third round (87th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft. Over his eight-season career, he played for the Bills, New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team, and Houston Texans. A highlight of his career was the six interceptions he recorded in 1999.
Post-Retirement and Health Challenges
After retiring from professional football in 2003, Stevens resided in Durham, North Carolina, where he enjoyed competitive shooting. In 2007, he suffered a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. By 2011, Stevens had regained some mobility through the use of special leg braces.
Passing
Stevens passed away on March 20, 2025, at the age of 51. He is survived by his mother Jean Thillberg, father Vincent Stevens, brother Mark Stevens, and children Cassidie and Colin Stevens.
