Michael Proctor, formerly a trooper with the Massachusetts State Police, was terminated following misconduct during the investigation of Karen Read, who was accused of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe. Proctor’s actions included sending derogatory and vulgar text messages about Read, leaking sensitive investigative information to non-law enforcement individuals, exhibiting biased behavior, and consuming alcohol while on duty.
These findings led to his dismissal after a trial board hearing.
Proctor’s family expressed disappointment over his termination, arguing that the investigation was unjust and that his actions were human errors under stressful circumstances, not indicative of corruption or incompetence. They maintain that his conduct did not compromise the investigation’s integrity.
Karen Read’s initial trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury, and her retrial is scheduled for April 1, 2025.
