New Zealand secured their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the Oceania qualifiers final on March 24, 2025, at Auckland’s Eden Park.
The match remained goalless until the 61st minute when Michael Boxall headed in a corner to give New Zealand the lead. Five minutes later, Kosta Barbarouses volleyed over the goalkeeper to double the advantage. Substitute Elijah Just sealed the win with a goal in the 80th minute.
This victory marks New Zealand’s third World Cup appearance, following their participations in 1982 and 2010. For New Caledonia, ranked 152nd globally, the loss ends their direct qualification hopes, but they will have another chance through intercontinental playoffs.
The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and will feature an expanded format with 48 teams.
