nose wipe celebration

The “nose wipe” celebration, popularized by NFL players like CeeDee Lamb and Deshaun Watson, involves a gesture where the index finger slides horizontally under the nose, often ending with a thumbs-down position. This act is inspired by Atlanta rapper Young Thug, who frequently uses the phrase “wipe your nose” in his music, suggesting a readiness to confront challenges or adversaries.

However, the NFL has recently banned this celebration, deeming it a “violent gesture” associated with gang symbolism, particularly linked to the Bloods, where such a motion signifies distrustworthiness. Consequently, performing the “nose wipe” on the field will now result in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

It’s important to distinguish this celebratory gesture from the “allergic salute,” a common action where individuals rub or wipe their nose upwardly to alleviate itching, often due to allergies. The allergic salute is typically a habitual response to nasal discomfort and is unrelated to the celebratory “nose wipe” gesture.
