Jan Oblak is a Slovenian professional footballer, widely regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers. Born on January 7, 1993, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, he began his career with Olimpija Ljubljana before moving to Portugal’s Benfica in 2010. After several loan spells, he became Benfica’s first-choice goalkeeper, helping the team secure the Primeira Liga title, the Portuguese Cup, and the League Cup during the 2013-2014 season.
In July 2014, Oblak signed with Spain’s Atlético Madrid for €16 million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in La Liga history at the time. He quickly established himself as the team’s primary goalkeeper, leading to multiple individual accolades, including five Zamora Trophies, awarded to La Liga’s best goalkeeper.
Oblak has been instrumental in Atlético Madrid’s successes, including winning the UEFA Europa League in 2018 and the UEFA Super Cup the same year. As of March 2025, he is approaching a historic milestone, being on the verge of surpassing Tomás Reñones’ record of 483 appearances for the club.
Beyond his club achievements, Oblak has been a key player for the Slovenian national team, consistently showcasing his exceptional shot-stopping abilities and leadership on the field.
