Pico Rivera is a city located in southeastern Los Angeles County, California, approximately 11 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. As of the 2020 United States census, the city has a population of 62,088.

History

Pico Rivera was formed from the merging of two unincorporated communities, Pico and Rivera, both named after historical figures and geographical features. The area transitioned from predominantly agricultural to a mix of residential and industrial development, especially after World War II. The city was officially incorporated on January 29, 1958, becoming the 61st city in Los Angeles County.

Geography

The city covers a total area of approximately 23 square kilometers (8.88 square miles), with about 21.5 km² (8.29 sq mi) of land and 1.5 km² (0.59 sq mi) of water, accounting for 6.6% of its area. It is bordered by several cities, including Montebello to the west, Downey to the south, Santa Fe Springs to the southeast, and Whittier to the east.

Parks and Recreation

Pico Rivera offers a variety of recreational facilities, including nine parks and eight playgrounds. Notable parks include Smith Park, Rivera Park, Pico Park, Rio Vista Park, and Stream Land Park. The city also features athletic fields, gymnasiums, community centers, a nine-hole executive golf course, a skatepark, and an aquatic center.

Sports and Events

The Pico Rivera Sports Arena, located on the city’s north side, hosts concerts and various events, contributing to the local cultural scene.

Transportation

Major transportation routes include Rosemead Boulevard (CA 19), which runs through the center of the city, and the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605), which runs along its southeastern edge, providing connectivity to the broader Los Angeles area.
