As of March 29, 2025, Atlanta experienced an unprecedented pollen count of 14,801 grains per cubic meter, significantly surpassing the previous record of 9,368 set in March 2012. Counts above 1,500 are categorized as “extreme.” This surge is primarily attributed to unusually warm temperatures in February, which led to an early and abundant bloom.
On March 27, the count was 1,605, with oak, pine, juniper, sweet gum, and hackberry being the predominant contributors. Following this peak, rain and storms over the weekend are expected to reduce pollen levels.
For individuals sensitive to pollen, it’s advisable to stay indoors during peak pollen hours (typically between 2 and 6 p.m.), keep windows closed, and change clothes after outdoor activities. Monitoring local pollen forecasts can also help in planning outdoor activities.
