Ray Holmberg, born December 10, 1944, is a former North Dakota state senator who served for 45 years before resigning in 2022 amid federal investigations into serious criminal activities. Prior to his resignation, Holmberg was a prominent figure in North Dakota politics, holding influential positions such as chairman of the Senate Appropriations and Legislative Management committees.
In August 2024, Holmberg pleaded guilty to charges related to traveling to Prague between 2011 and 2021 with the intent to engage in illicit sexual activities with minors. Prosecutors presented evidence that he used aliases and frequented establishments where young boys provided sexual services.
On March 26, 2025, Holmberg was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. Federal Judge Daniel Hovland described Holmberg’s actions as “egregious and despicable,” emphasizing that a shorter sentence would not serve as an adequate deterrent.
Holmberg’s long tenure and subsequent criminal conviction have had a significant impact on North Dakota’s political landscape, prompting discussions about accountability and the use of public office for personal gain.
