rex heuermann

Rex Heuermann is a 61-year-old architect from Long Island, New York, who has been charged with the murders of seven women, primarily sex workers, in the Gilgo Beach area between 1993 and 2011. Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings began in 2010 with the discovery of the remains of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, collectively known as “The Gilgo Four.” Over the following years, additional remains were found, leading to the identification of more victims. Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 after DNA evidence, including mitochondrial DNA from a discarded pizza crust, linked him to the murders.

Since his arrest, Heuermann’s family has faced significant challenges. His wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce in July 2023 after 27 years of marriage. Ellerup and their two adult children, Victoria and stepson Christopher, have struggled with public scrutiny and emotional distress. The family sold their Massapequa Park home and plans to relocate to South Carolina to rebuild their lives.

The case has drawn significant public attention, inspiring documentaries such as “Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer,” which delves into the investigation and impact of the crimes. The series features interviews with victims’ families and law enforcement officials involved in the case.

As of March 2025, legal proceedings are ongoing, with debates over the admissibility of DNA evidence collected during the investigation. The defense has challenged certain DNA evidence due to the methods used in its collection.
