Sherrod Brown is an American politician who served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio from 2007 to 2025. Born on November 9, 1952, in Mansfield, Ohio, he began his political career in the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1975. He later served as Ohio’s Secretary of State from 1983 to 1991 and represented Ohio’s 13th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2007.
In 2006, Brown was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating incumbent Republican Mike DeWine. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2018, known for his advocacy for workers’ rights and progressive policies. However, in the 2024 election, Brown was unseated by Republican challenger Bernie Moreno.
Following his Senate loss, Brown launched the “Dignity of Work Institute” in March 2025, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to understanding and improving the lives of American workers through research and advocacy. At 72, he has not ruled out future political endeavors, including potential runs for the Senate or Ohio governor in 2026.
