Tage Thompson is an American professional ice hockey center who currently plays for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on October 30, 1997, in Phoenix, Arizona, he stands 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds.

Early Life and Education

Thompson’s father, Brent Thompson, is a former NHL player and current assistant coach for the Anaheim Ducks. Growing up, Tage lived in various locations due to his father’s career, attending 11 different schools. He eventually graduated early from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to pursue his hockey career.

He began his collegiate hockey career at the University of Connecticut, playing for the UConn Huskies. In his freshman year (2015-2016), he led the nation with 14 power play goals and accumulated 32 points in 36 games. He continued his impressive performance in his sophomore year, leading the team with 19 goals and 32 points in 34 games.

Professional Career

Thompson was selected 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Blues during the 2017-2018 season. In July 2018, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres as part of a deal that sent Ryan O’Reilly to St. Louis.

During the 2021-2022 season, Thompson had a breakout year, scoring 38 goals and totaling 68 points in 78 games. His performance earned him a seven-year, $50 million contract extension with the Sabres in August 2022.

The 2022-2023 season saw Thompson continue his stellar play. He scored five goals in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets in December 2022, tying the Sabres’ franchise record. He also became the first Sabres player to record four hat-tricks in a season since Drew Stafford in 2010-2011.

International Play

On the international stage, Thompson has represented the United States in several tournaments. He won a gold medal at the 2015 U18 World Championship and another gold at the 2017 U20 World Championship. He also earned bronze medals at the 2018 and 2021 World Championships.

Personal Life

Thompson is married to Rachel, and the couple has two sons. He is also the older brother of Tyce Thompson, who plays as a forward in the New York Islanders organization.
