Rashida Tlaib is an American politician and activist serving as the U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 12th congressional district since 2023. Born on July 24, 1976, in Detroit, Michigan, she is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants. Tlaib made history in 2019 as one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, alongside Ilhan Omar.
In the November 2024 elections, Tlaib secured a fourth term by defeating Republican challenger James D. Hooper. She serves on both the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.
Tlaib is known for her progressive stances, particularly her vocal support for Palestinian rights. In November 2024, she faced controversy over a Thanksgiving message that mourned the suffering of Indigenous peoples and Palestinians, which some interpreted as a criticism of Israel.
She has also been involved in debates concerning the prosecution of pro-Palestinian protesters in Michigan, leading to public disagreements with state officials.
Despite these controversies, Tlaib remains a prominent figure in advocating for Palestinian human rights and continues to influence discussions on U.S. foreign policy and domestic civil rights issues.
