The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is a public research university located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Established on September 4, 1947, as Wilmington College, it initially served as a junior college primarily for World War II veterans. The institution transitioned to a four-year liberal arts college in 1963 and became a university in 1969, joining the University of North Carolina system.
Today, UNCW offers 55 bachelor’s degrees, 35 master’s degrees, and four doctoral programs across various disciplines. The university is organized into several colleges, including the Cameron School of Business, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts, the College of Science and Engineering, and the Watson College of Education.
In athletics, the UNCW Seahawks compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). The university fields 19 varsity teams across men’s and women’s sports, including baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and beach volleyball. The men’s basketball team has made six NCAA Tournament appearances, with their most recent in 2017, and the baseball team has participated in multiple NCAA regionals, reflecting a strong athletic tradition.
Recently, the UNCW men’s basketball team clinched their first NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years by defeating Delaware 76-72 in the Coastal Athletic Association final. Donovan Newby led the team with 17 points, including crucial free throws in the final moments.
