The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is a nonpartisan, independent nonprofit organization founded by Congress in 1984. Its mission is to promote global peace and security by preventing and resolving violent conflicts worldwide. USIP provides research, analysis, and training in conflict resolution, mediation, and peacebuilding.
Recently, on March 17, 2025, the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) intervened in USIP’s operations. DOGE personnel entered USIP’s Washington, D.C., headquarters despite the organization’s protests regarding its independent status. This action resulted in the removal of most of USIP’s board members and the dismissal of President and CEO George Moose.
USIP has expressed its intention to pursue legal action against these measures, asserting that the intervention violates its legal protections as an independent nonprofit established by Congress.
