Wayne County is located in the southeastern part of Missouri, within the Ozark foothills. As of the 2020 census, its population was 10,974. The county seat is Greenville. Established on December 11, 1818, Wayne County was named after General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a prominent figure in the American Revolution.
On March 15, 2025, Wayne County, particularly the city of Piedmont, experienced severe storms and tornadoes that resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. At least six fatalities were reported in the county, with extensive property damage affecting numerous homes and infrastructure. In response, emergency teams have been deployed to assist with recovery efforts, and a curfew has been imposed to ensure public safety during the ongoing situation.
