world down syndrome day

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed annually on March 21 to raise awareness about Down syndrome and to promote the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals with this condition. The date, 21/3, was chosen to signify the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.

Established by Down Syndrome International, WDSD has been officially recognized by the United Nations since 2012. Each year, various events and activities are organized worldwide to celebrate the lives and contributions of people with Down syndrome, and to advocate for their rights and inclusion in society.

A common way to participate in WDSD is by wearing colorful or mismatched socks, symbolizing the uniqueness of individuals with Down syndrome.

In 2025, the theme for World Down Syndrome Day is “With Us, Not For Us,” emphasizing the importance of involving individuals with Down syndrome in decisions that affect their lives.

On March 21, 2025, numerous events took place globally to commemorate WDSD:

  • Inclusive Sports Events: United South High School in Laredo, Texas, hosted a special inclusive basketball game bringing together students with and without special needs.
  • Celebrity Celebrations: Actress Caterina Scorsone shared heartfelt photos with her 8-year-old daughter, Pippa, who has Down syndrome, highlighting the beauty of individuality.
  • Fashion Shows: In New York City, Gigi’s Playhouse organized its 7th annual fashion show featuring over 30 models with Down syndrome, promoting empowerment and inclusion.

These events and many others worldwide underscore the significance of World Down Syndrome Day in fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
