The Youngstown State University (YSU) Penguins basketball teams have experienced notable developments during the 2024–25 season.
Men’s Basketball:
- Season Performance: The men’s team, under first-year head coach Ethan Faulkner, concluded the regular season with a 20–12 overall record and a 13–7 mark in Horizon League play, securing a tie for second place.
- Postseason Run: In the Horizon League tournament, the Penguins advanced to the championship game but fell to Robert Morris, 89–78, on March 11, 2025.
Women’s Basketball:
- Coaching Changes: The women’s team began the season under head coach John Barnes, who stepped down in January 2024 due to personal reasons. Associate head coach John Nicolais served as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
- Season Record: The Penguins finished the 2023–24 season with a 13–15 overall record and a 9–9 conference record, tying for sixth place in the Horizon League.
- New Leadership: On March 14, 2024, Melissa Jackson was appointed as the new head coach, bringing experience from her previous roles at Akron and Cleveland State.
